Beyoncé Knowles: The Queen B
From Vogue Magazine
Has there ever been a steeper,
stranger, more rollicking two-week roller coaster in American pop-cultural life
than the one Beyoncé Knowles rode from the middle of January (not long after I
interviewed her for Vogue) into early February?
The craziness started, of
course, with that national anthem on the Capitol steps; Beyoncé’s soaring
rendition was lavishly praised at first, but then it was revealed to have been
sung to a prerecorded track. The resulting uproar was noisy and blustery and as
close to a scandal as Beyoncé had experienced in her life; for an artist
accustomed to controlling the narrative, it was unfamiliar, awkward territory.
It got nasty—Beyoncé was shoved forward as a symbol of a synthetic
generation—and yet she said nothing for ten days, until surfacing in a white
Olcay Gulsen minidress at a Super Bowl press conference in New Orleans on
January 31.
There, she opened by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”
again—clearly live—in a soulful and satisfying and very much Beyoncé way. As a
bit of crisis-management stagecraft, it was a knockout, and after Beyoncé
sailed through to the “home of the brave,” she smiled and offered two words to
her skeptics:
“Any questions?”

NAF has only one serviceable aircraft for training
The Air Officer
Commanding Training Command, Air Vice Marshall Isyaku Umar, has lamented that
the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kaduna has only one serviceable aircraft for the
training of officers and men.
Umar told Chief
of Air Staff Air Marshal Alex Badeh, who was on his maiden familiarization tour
of the NAF base in Kaduna yesterday that “the NAF base has only one serviceable
aircraft used in the training of its personnel”, saying the training base needs
a minimum of three aircraft to be able to conduct its local training as well as
VIP missions.
He said since
his assumption the command has been able to aid the federal government’s
efforts in internal security operations with men and helicopter deployment and
has as well participated actively in the recent Mali operation in line with
NAF’s directives.
The command,
according to him, has successfully graduated six student pilots (SP) of 38
course and five student instructor pilots recently concluded their training at
303 Options Training School.
Speaking after
his tour of various units in the NAF base, Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Alex
Badeh said his visit to the Kaduna Training Command was to familiarize with
officers and men of the command with a view to repositioning and moving the Air
Force forward.
“I expect
myself to give approval for maintenance of facilities that are
dilapidated... we are recruiting more
and more people in the service now as our services are required at all times
and if resources permit, we will build more accommodation for our officers and
men. Kaduna base has always done well, although there are small challenges here
and there, but the government is doing its best to provide for our needs”, he
said.
Here's My Take On: 53 die in Zambia’s worst bus crash
It was a black day in Zambia as
53 people were killed in a high-speed collision between a bus and a truck in
Zambia on Thursday.
The government said the accident
was one of the country’s worst-ever traffic accidents.
The bus carrying 73 passengers
hurtled into an oncoming truck, leaving bloodied bodies and wreckage on a main
road north of Lusaka.
“I can confirm that 53 people
have died in the accident,” AFP quotes Harry Kalaba, an official in the Vice
President’s office, as saying at the crash site 100 kilometres (60 miles) north
of the capital.
“There was serious speeding by
all the vehicles involved,” Kalaba said.
A survivor of the crash, Ackim
Shawa who spoke on his hospital bed told AFP that, the Zambia Postal Service
bus — which also runs passenger transport services — had been taking passengers
from the Copperbelt mining province to Lusaka.
“While closing in on its final
destination the bus had been trying to swerve to avoid another oncoming
vehicle.”
Fifty-one people on the bus died,
while the truck driver and his assistant were also killed.
Pictures from the scene show
bloodied and lifeless bodies lying next to the mangled wreckage of the
vehicles.
Kim K Still S**** ... Even In Pregnancy!
On Thursday, Feb. 7, the mom-to-be stepped out in L.A.
wearing a sheer black shirt over a black bra, with black flared trousers.
Obviously, pregnancy doesn’t make Kim balk on her fashion
sense!

Lionel Messi signs a two-year contract extension with Barcelona
Lionel Messi has signed a
two-year contract extension with Barcelona which will tie him to the Spanish
club until June 2018. The Argentina international, 25, enjoyed a
record-breaking year for club and country, scoring 91 goals in 2012.
Messi signed a new deal on
Thursday afternoon and follows Carles Puyol and Xavi, who both signed their
extensions last month. Defender Puyol and midfielder Xavi agreed new deals
until 2016.
A statement on the Barcelona
website said: "This afternoon Leo Messi extended his contract with FC Barcelona
through June 30 of 2018.
"The signing ceremony was
attended by the player, president Sandro Rosell, vice-president Josep Maria
Bartomeu and the director of football Andoni Zubizarreta.
"Messi added two additional
years to his existing contract, which was set to expire in June of 2016.
"The player, who joined the
club when he was 13 years old and made his first-team debut three years later,
will be 31 when his contract expires." Barcelona are top of La Liga with a
nine-point cushion over nearest rivals Atletico Madrid. They are away to AC Milan
in the last 16 of the Champions League on 20 February.
Messi has been in the best
goal-scoring form of his career and surpassed Gerd Mueller's 40-year-old record
of 85 goals scored in a calendar year with a brace in a 2-1 win over Real Betis
on 9 December.
Messi had agreed the contract at
the end of last year but has only just signed it.
He has scored eight times in
Barcelona's first five La Liga matches of the calendar year, including four
against Osasuna in a 5-1 win on 27 January.
Last month he was awarded the
Ballon d'Or for a fourth year running ahead of Barcelona team-mate Andres
Iniesta and Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid.

Reps suspend Jamb’s E-Test, summon Education Minister
The Minister of Education,
Professor Rukayyatu Rufai was summoned by the House of Representatives over
the planned conduct of computer based test for the 2013 Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME) by the Joint Admission Matriculation and
Examination Board (JAMB).
Prof. Rufai’s led Ministry of
Education was directed to suspend the computer-based test planned for April
this year and revert back to the use of old existing centres and the new
secondary schools constructed by various arms of government.
Reason is: to give more time
to equip these schools with necessary infrastructure to conduct computer test.
The motion was sponsored by Hon.
Ali Madaki, from Kano State.
Rukayyatu is expected to appear
before the House Committee on Education, alongside the JAMB Registrar in other
to explain the “reason behind the policy somersault that led to change in takes
off of the policy from 2015 to 2013; the law that empowers JAMB to contract out
the conduct of examination to private firms? And who the firms are.”
