Governor Fashola Says: Nigerians Are Too Difficult To Please

At the St Saviour’s Anglican Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Marina, Lagos, southwest Nigeria during the church’s 32nd Synod. Fashola lamented that people complained too much instead of helping the government to solve the problems at hand.

 “Nigerians are very difficult people to please. He gave an example of when Nigerians were complaining of incessant harassment by policemen at checkpoints, they were dismantled by the Inspector General of Police. The same Nigerians are now complaining that the absence of the checkpoints have aided the free operation of criminals on the roads.

He said “The same scenario is playing out on the issue of ban by the police of the indiscriminate use of tinted glasses by motorist, which has been taken advantage of by criminals. The people are now accusing the police of being highhanded on the issue,”

He added that “In the last week, the number of lives that have been lost to violence and insecurity must bring any serious people into a sense of sobriety and a very serious question about what direction our country is heading,”.

He is right, in a way! Man is difficult to please, and we complain too much instead of giving meaningful advice to resolve the situation at hand. As for the tinted glass issue, my own is that the politicians and the high state officers should first stop using tinted glasses and Nigerians will follow suit. 

They should lead by example, and walk the talk.

I complain too much chei? ;-)

Lauren Hill Gets Jailed For Unpaid Tax

Lauryn Hill the popular Grammy-winning singer has been sentenced to three months in prison and three months of home confinement for failing to pay about $1m in taxes. She pleaded guilty last year

Hill explained that she was unable to pay taxes during a period of time when she dropped out of the music business.

She said: "I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that."

Before the sentencing, her attorney said Hill had paid more than $970,000 (£624,000) to satisfy the New Jersey state and federal tax liabilities.

Hill had faced a maximum sentence of one year each on three counts.

I am quite sick of this shiz. I hate when celebrities get famous and slowly but surely lighten their skin. They do this in a lot of ways, with actual bleaching products, wearing extremely light foundation or with Photoshop. Look, I am not going to debate about the politics of brown women wearing a weave or sporting your natural hair texture (that’s another conversation). 

It is worrisome to me when brown people begin to alter their appearance to look more Anglo. If you notice when people get nose jobs it isn’t to widen or round their noses it’s always to have traditionally Anglo noses. Is it because my nose is ugly? Folk that shift.

When people of color become blonder, whiter and narrow out their facial features to look more “beautiful” or more “glamorous” it sends the message that in order to look  beautiful and glamorous you have to abandon all those wonderful features that expose your “ethnicness.” 

How many famous black actresses or singers are dark skinned in proportion to lighter skinned? How many have afros? How many have wide noses? The pressure to look a certain way in Hollywood exists for everyone regardless of race and especially for women.

A US military plane just 'crashed' in Kyrgyzstan

I just read that a US military refuelling plane has caught fire in mid air and crashed near the border between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

The aircraft took off from the US military transit centre on Friday at Kyrgyzstan's Manas airport, which US forces maintain for operations in Afghanistan, the Interfax news agency reported.

The plane, used for inflight refuelling, disappeared from radar screens at 3:10 pm (0910 GMT), as it flew near the Kyrgyz village of Chaldovar, the ministry said.

An official responsible for the southern Kyrgyz province of Chuisk, where Chaldovar is located said that “(The plane) caught fire in the air and crashed," 

Officials did not say how many people were on board, it is also reported that US staff at the US transit centre declined to comment.

The Manas base is used to transport US personnel in and out of Afghanistan and has been used by other international forces fighting in the country.

Former Governor Ibori Fails At An Attempt To Secure An Early Release!

Former Delta State Governor James Ibori lawyers made an attempt to secure an early release from Her Majesty Prison (HMP), Little Lartin, United Kingdom (UK), this failed on Thursday.

Three Court judges, Lord Justice Treacy, Mr. Justice Edward -Stuart and the Recorder of Leeds Appeal threw out his case at the Royal Courts of Justice at the Strand, said they were convinced that Ibori deserved the 13-year jail term which he got at Southwark Crown Court at the hands of Judge Anthony Pitts in April 2013.

“The judgment is wholly appropriate,” the court ruled, just before 1.00 p.m. after the lead judge had taken about an hour to read how they arrived at their verdict to a fully packed court, consisting mainly of Ibori’s kinsmen from the London branch of Oghara Clan Union.

The judges even said that Pitts had been “too generous” to give Ibori enough discounts to the effect that he actually got just four  years and about six months  - out of which he had already spent a little over a year.

As the reality of the verdict dawned on Ibori’s people, numbering over 20 (including an elderly woman of about 60, wearing a “free Ibori” T-shirt), they had long faces and started filing outside the Courtroom Seven, discussing in hushed tones.

U.S Visa Lottery Programme To Be Scraped In 2017

It’s no news that United States (U.S.) has plans to reform its immigration laws. The news is that this will eliminate the green card lottery. 

Around 100,000 people were Wednesday picked from several million who applied to get the Green Card. This could be the last batch of the yearly lottery.

The system that will replace it in 2017 will be merit-based and will also give Africans a chance.

Although so many opine that Africans could be the big losers owing to the fact that they are the main beneficiaries of the visa programme.

The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People said the number of African immigrants would go down even with the merit-based system. “In essence, we’re concerned,” said Hilary Shelton, the NAACP Washington bureau director.

Na wa o!
