According to the Sun Newspaper, "Tales of woes
spread through Lagos and Ogun state communities yesterday as residents bemoaned
their losses, aftermath of an all-night downpour. The rain, which lasted about
15 hours, almost sank the two states with many residential areas submerged. The
two major roads linking them -Lagos/Abeokuta and Apapa/Oshodi/Tollgate, were
not spared as they became flooded, given motorists and commuters hellish
experience.
The ugly development was almost a recap of last July’s experience, which led to lost lives and property. But as at Press time, only one person was confirmed dead in Lagos. Nonetheless, Lagos State government has warned that the ugly experience has just started, alerting residents to prepare for nasty days ahead. The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, said the next two weeks would be turbulent as we would witness torrential rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms.
Worst-hit by the flood are; Oshodi, Mafoluku, Shasha, Abooru, Baruga,Amukoko Makoko, Festac Town, Jakande Estate, Bariga, Lekki, Mile 2, Agboju, Abule-Egba, Ayobo, Akowonjo, Ipaja and Palmgrove areas. In Ogun State, areas like Ayetoro, Itele and Sango-Ota were not spared.

The commissioner urged Lagos residents “to desist from acts that could lead to flooding, which include dumping of waste into canals, and erecting of structures along water channels. “In case of emergency, all residents are implored to take full advantage of drainage engineers and drainage maintenance officers. The officers have been posted to all the 20 local government areas (LGAs) and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs) across the state. “Residents are expected to relate with them effectively to solve their drainage challenges. These officers are readily available to provide relief and solutions to all flooding challenges in each local government area.”
