South Africa Takes The Lead, Opens Africa's First Solar Powered Airport

South Africa has taken the lead by opening Africa's first solar powered airport in the Western Cape of South Africa. The George Airport now receives 41% of its electricity from a brand new 200 square meter solar power plant built on the airports grounds.

The facility which costs over a million US dollars has 3,000 photo voltaic modules. The capacity will over time be increased to deliver 750Kw power when full production is reached.

South Africa's Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa says that the new solar-powered airport will rely on renewable sources that are cost effective to generate energy and support South Africa’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
