In Nigeria: IG of Police Set To Remarry

According to Sahara Reporters Nigeria's Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar is getting ready to remarry a year and a half after losing his wife, Maryam Abubakar, to cancer. (She died in January 2012)

Sahara Reporters obtained a photo from a series of photos taken during a photo shoot in preparation for their grand wedding.

IG Abubakar will be engaging in a three-day wedding to 35 year old Safiya (pictured above with him). Their wedding proper will take place on Saturday September 14th 2013.

Congrats to them.

Something You Should Know About Abia State- History

“Abia” is an acronym formed from the initial letters of four groups of people, namely: Aba, Bende, lsuikwuato and Afikpo to form ABIA. These constituted the major groups in the state at its creation.

At the country’s independence in 1960, Abia was part of the then Eastern Region. From 27th May, 1967, it became a part of the East Central State, created by the then Head of the Federal Military Government, General Yakubu Gowon. On 3rd February, 1976, East Central State was split into two states(Anambra and Imo) by the Federal Military Government headed by General Murtala Mohammed.

On 27th August, 1991, the Federal Military Government under General lbrahimBabangida carved out Abia State from Imo State, bringing to thirty the number of states in Nigeria. Furthermore, in October, 1996, the Federal Military Government under General SaniAbacha created six more states bringing to thirty-six the number of states in the federation.

During this exercise, four local government areas (LGAs) namely, Onicha, Ohaozara, Afikpo North and Afikpo South, which occupy the northeastern corner of the state, were transferred to the (newly created) Ebonyi State.

De Raufs To Sponsor Stowaway Teenager To Varsity Level

De Raufs, a volunteer group extolling the virtues of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Governor, state of Osun, has volunteered to sponsor 15year old stowaway teenager, Daniel Ohikhena who sensationally hid in the tyre compartment of Arik air flight from Benin to Lagos.

In a statement signed by the Director General of the group, Comrade Amitolu Shittu, the group stated that it is ready to give scholarship to Daniel up to university level and help him realize his dream of travelling by air legitimately.

Shittu said, genius and ambitious citizens of our country must not be suffocated on the altar of political and bureaucratic enforcement, the little boy’s ambition should be nurtured through qualitative education, and the group is ready to give the boy all the necessary support to make his dream a reality.

We are sincerely willing to offer him the scholarship in other to encourage thousands of teenagers who are genius and ambitious, the leaders in Nigeria fail on their part to see the potential of the little boy; therefore De Raufs take up the responsibility to safe the future of this great boy and not turning him to criminal.

The parent of the boy should contact the secretariat of our group for further briefing. The group stated.

In Lagos: Commercial Bus Driver and Conductor Strip Naked To Avoid Police Arrest

Crazy things happen in Lagos. Yesterday, a  commercial bus driver and his conductor stripped naked at the Allen Avenue/Obafemi Awolowo Way roundabout in Ikeja to prevent some policemen (in the pic) arresting them for alleged traffic violation and towing their vehicle. Their crazy stunt caused heavy traffic around the area this morning and from reports, it actually worked as the policemen left the scene quickly.

My name is Atiku Abubakar. I wouldn’t be who I am today without education.

I have always talked about how I attended school very much against the wish of my late father. My dad was actually sent to prison for barring his son from access to education.

As my biography makes clear, I only started attending school after the authorities put my father in jail. Amazingly, this poor boy who could have missed the chance of an education grew to occupy one of the highest offices of the land. This is the power of education; it holds the potential to transform lives by liberating human beings from poverty, ignorance and disease.

Because of this personal example, all my life I have aspired to, working with fellow countrymen and women, create and expand access to education for every child in the land. More than twenty years ago, long before I became Vice President, with the able support of my wife, I started my first school, a kindergarten/primary school. In the time since then the venture has expanded to university level, providing world-class education to multitudes of young persons – many of whom are indigent students who get generous concessions and scholarships, because of my firm belief that poverty should never be allowed to stand in the way of a great education.

Oga Jonathan Axes Youth Minister

The frosty relationship between President Goodluck Jonathan and five northern governors on Monday claimed its victim  as the President ordered the sack of the Minister of Youth Affairs, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir.

Our correspondents learnt that the minister was sacked, among other reasons, because of his continuous loyalty to the Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko.

Until his appointment, Abdulkadir was the state Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice in the Wamakko administration.

It was gathered that the minister would be replaced by another indigene of Sokoto State that could be trusted to deliver the state for Jonathan in 2015.

The minister was said to have stayed this long because of the belief that he would shift his loyalty from Wamakko to the President.

A Presidency source said, “The President cannot afford to retain any minister, who is working at cross purposes with him in any state.

Popular Nigerian Musician Iyanya Signs A $350,000 Deal With Zinox Computers Group

This guy is chopping money via endorsement deals.  First it was MTN, now Zinox Group. Yesterday, the Kukere crooner signed a one year three hundred and fifty thousand dollars endorsement deal with Zinox Computers.

Zinox computer  is Nigeria’s first certified branded computers. They will upload all Iyanya's songs and videos to all their computers. Iyanya will also do a song for them and appear on Zinox billboards and TV commercials.

Suntai Seeks To Resume Duty, Writes Assembly

It’s been reported that recuperating Governor Danbaba Suntai may have sent a letter to the Taraba State House of Assembly seeking to resume work. We all saw his state and it’s obvious he is still recuperating.

Here’s how Punch is reporting it.

RECUPERATING Governor Danbaba Suntai may have sent a letter to the Taraba State House of Assembly seeking to resume work.

The letter, according to a United States- based Nigerian online news portal, SaharaReporters, was on Monday received by the Speaker of the House of Assembly,Haruna Tsokwa.

 The portal did not say exactly when the letter was written and the day the governor, who arrived in the country from the US after a 10-month medical sojourn, hoped to commence duties.

But it quoted sources close to the Assembly as saying that Suntai, in the letter, claimed to have fully recovered from the injuries he sustained when a small aircraft he piloted crashed on October 25, 2012.

The agency added that the Assembly might on Tuesday (today) hold plenary on the governor’s return. A source hinted that  he might be  invited   to address the lawmakers  on the state of his health and plans to resume work.

The Speaker of the assembly, Haruna Tsokwa,met with the Acting Governor, Alhaji Garba Umar,  in the latter’s office on Monday  evening.

Tsokwa declined to speak with reporters on his way out of the office.

Suntai, on arrival at the domestic wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja,  looked frail and was aided to alight from the chartered aircraft that flew him.
