83 Micro Finance Banks Liquidated By CBN

The Manager Director of  Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim during his defense of NDIC’s 2014 Budget before the Senate Committee on Banking and Currency disclosed that 83 Microfinance banks operating in Nigeria has been liquidated.

He also announced that plans were on to work out ways and means to regulate mobile banking in Nigeria. The NDIC boss justified the liquidation of the 83 MFBs on the discovery that some of the banks exists only on paper while some are used to defraud Nigerians.

He said there are up to 900 Micro Finance Banks operation in the country out of which 83 have been listed for liquidation.

Ibrahim said NDIC is already working to determine the number of depositors and how much each deposited in the banks in order to pay them.

74 Million Litres Of PMS Arrives Lagos Port

Reports indicate that the fuel scarcity situation in Nigeria is set to subside, as major fuel marketers, yesterday, said they have available, the delivery of about 74 million litres of PMS, at their depots in Lagos.

Reports have it that Mr. Obafemi Olowore, Executive Secretary, Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, MOMAN said that three vessels, namely United Enterprises, Ocean Centurion and Alizea are discharging fuel in PWA jetty, NOJ jetty and BOP jetty all belonging to MOMAN.

Jonathan Sacks Sports Minister, Swears In 11 New Ministers

This morning, March 5th 2014, the Presidency  announced the sack of the Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi. He has been replaced by Tamuno Danagogo.

The president also swore-in 11 new ministers and assigned them ministries. The ministers are:

Judges Approves Retirement Of Suspended Justices

President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the compulsory retirement of Justices Gladys Olotu and U. A. Inyang of the Federal High Court and FCT High Court with effect from 3rd February 2014. 

Last week it the suspension of the justices was announced. Justice G.K. Olotu of the Federal High Court and Justice U. A. Inyang were suspended for gross misconduct after which the Nigerian Judicial Council (NJC) headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, forwarded a recommendation for their compulsory retirement to  President Goodluck Jonathan. 

It was reported that the recommendation for compulsory retirement of the two judges was based on findings made by the NJC after investigations into allegations contained in petitions brought against them.

Popular Nigerian Artist Obesere Has Been Arrested For Alledged Rape

LAGOS — Popular Fuji musician,  Alhaji Abass Akande, popularly known as Obesere, has been arrested  by the Police in Lagos State for allegedly raping a 29-year-old business woman, Miss Olanike Olaiya in his Okota residence, Lagos.

The victim, who took the matter to the Police, also narrated her ordeal in the hands of the musician whose shows generally fascinate society women.

According to Olaiya, a  National Diploma graduate of business administration from Ibadan Polytechnic, “I got to know  Obesere through one of my friends, Mrs Bola Okoro. She told me that Obesere would assist me in my business.

Guard Discovers Bomb Inside Bank In Osun State

A security guard attached to a branch of First Bank Plc in Osogbo, Osun State discovered an explosive substance wrapped in a polythene bag inside the banking hall on Tuesday 4th March, 2014.

It was reported that bank officials and customers were quickly evacuated from the bank immediately the explosive substance was discovered.

The Police Anti-Bomb Squad was later deployed in the bank and they were said to have detonated the bomb, they also cordoned off Station Road, where the bank is located.

As soon as the information filtered to neighbouring shop owners, many hurriedly closed their shops, while some left their wares and ran for safety.

Nigerian Industrialist Aliko Dangote Is 23rd Richest Man In The World

Forbes magazine released the world’s 500 Richest people's list yesterday Monday March 3rd, Nigerian industrialist, Aliko Dangote is the 23rd richest man in the world. 

Dangote has history as the first black man to break into the rank of top 25 richest people in the world.

In 2012, he was the 76th richest man in the world. He moved from that to 43rd richest man in 2013 and now to 23rd in 2014 with his wealth jumping from $16.1billion to $25billion.

Former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates takes back the No.1 position as the richest man in the world with $76billion. Geez!
