U.S Visa Lottery Programme To Be Scraped In 2017

It’s no news that United States (U.S.) has plans to reform its immigration laws. The news is that this will eliminate the green card lottery. 

Around 100,000 people were Wednesday picked from several million who applied to get the Green Card. This could be the last batch of the yearly lottery.

The system that will replace it in 2017 will be merit-based and will also give Africans a chance.

Although so many opine that Africans could be the big losers owing to the fact that they are the main beneficiaries of the visa programme.

The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People said the number of African immigrants would go down even with the merit-based system. “In essence, we’re concerned,” said Hilary Shelton, the NAACP Washington bureau director.

And The Winner Is: Turai Floors Patience Jonathan On Land Tussle

Nigeria’s former First Lady, Hajia Turai Yar’Adua on Thursday floored incumbent First Lady Patience Goodluck Jonathan as Justice Peter Affren of the Abuja High Court set aside the purported revocation by the FCT administration of a land measuring about 1.84 hectares allocated to Turai’s non-governmental organization, Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation, WAYEF.

The court held that the claims by the FCT Minister that the land was revoked on an overriding public interest were not supported by any shred of evidence before the court. It further held that the initial letter of offer issued Turai’s organization by the Minister remains valid and subsisting.

“The defendants failed woefully to adduce any shred of evidence before this court to support their claims that the allocation of the land was revoked on overriding public interest. There is no overriding public interest in this issue. The allocation made to the plaintiff who is a vocational training centre was in public interest and in line with section 28 (1) of Land Use Act”

The court faulted the FCT Minister’s exercise of his powers in revoking the plot of land allocated to Turai’s organization, noting that the exercise of that power to revoke allocation of land must come within the confines of the law.

Delivery of the court’s judgment was adjourned by the court several times to enable Mrs. Jonathan and Hajia Turai Yar’Adua reach a negotiated settlement but all to no avail.

75-year-old Queen Beatrix handed over power in a constitutionally ordained ceremony in the Mozes Hall of the royal palace in Amsterdam to her eldest son Willem-Alexander. The transfer became official as she signed the "instrument of abdication" this means she will now be known as Princess Beatrix.

Queen Beatrix told the crowd. "I'm happy and grateful to present you your new King Willem-Alexander," 

46 year old Willem-Alexander will be the first King of the Netherlands since 1890. 

Wow! I can only think of England  wow again!

Gay Man Stabs Partner To Death In Nigeria

The Lagos State Police Command has started investigation into the murder of a banker, Adindu Ohamara, who was stabbed to death by his suspected homosexual lover in Akoka, Bariga Local Council Development Area  of Lagos State.
 

It was gathered that Ohamara lived in a three-bedroom flat with his elder sister, Flora and one Collins, an undergraduate of the University of Lagos.

According to residents, the banker  was stabbed repeatedly at his residence located at 26 Obayan Street.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ohamara, who was believed to be a homosexual, was fond of bringing different men, who were also believed to be into same sex relationship, to his home.

It was learnt that trouble started  when he (Ohamara) decided to get married due to pressure from his family.

A resident, who craved anonymity, said after the banker  had his wedding introduction, a man, believed to be  also  a gay came to fight him.

He said, “A few weeks ago, Ohamara did his wedding introduction and shortly after that, one man came to the compound to fight him.There was a lot of noise over the issue and even neighbours had to come to settle the matter.

“The unidentified man complained that he had been jilted and threatened to deal with Ohamara before he left in anger.”

Mobile Number Portability Commences Today In Nigeria

Nigeria today, joined Ghana in the use of Mobile Portability Number (MNP). This allows mobile subscribers to move from one network to another without changing their numbers.

 Telecoms subscribers in the country have shown excitement at the dawn of this new era.

MNP reduces switching cost of updating marketing and business materials, notifying family members, repainting business vans because of changed numbers e.t.c.

To network Providers, it boosts the level of open competition among networks operators, it becomes easier for new entrants to gain market share, it acts as incentive for service providers to improve on quality of service and customer satisfaction.

So Nigerians can now switch from one network to another without changing numbers. Over to you Nigerians!
