OMG! A tanker Fell this Morning in Rivers, People burn't to Death!

A tanker fell this morning in Okobe in Ahoada West LGA.  Source say that the tanker didn't burst into flames until people rushed to the site to scoop fuel (petrol). The accident left many dead.

At least 90 people including women and children were burnt to death early today Thursday July 12th while scooping fuel from a fallen tanker at Okobe in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State. The fuel tanker crashed into some vehicles and fell, spilling its content but didn't immediately burst into flames. Unfortunately it exploded when residents of the area went to the scene to scoop fuel from the tanker. 

Rivers State police spokesman Ben Ugwuegbulam explained:

            Early this morning a tanker loaded with petrol fell in Okogbe and people trooped to the scene
            obviously to scoop the spilled fuel and suddenly there was fire resulting in casualties

A team of police officers, soldiers and emergency workers were dispatched to the scene, where burnt bodies were removed.

Updates:

 The Federal Road Safety Commission said on Today that rescue officials had recovered 95 bodies from the area where a tanker burst into flames on the East-West Road at Okobie, Rivers State as people scrambled for petrol.

FRSC Sector Commander for Rivers State, Dr. Kayode Olagunju, in a text message to the News Agency of Nigeria, said the bodies were recovered at the village, 11 kilometres from Ahoada-Mbiama, in Ahoada West Local Government Area.

According to him, four vehicles, including the tanker, were involved in a crash early today, but the tanker caught fire when the people rushed for “free fuel.”

He said, “People were scooping fuel from the tanker when it exploded, casualty figures definitely high, and about 20 injured persons already taken to the hospitals.

“Thirty-four motor-cycles also got burnt,” he added. The spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaibu, also said 95 bodies had been removed from the scene.

The incident caused a gridlock on the busy highway.
